ABOUT

Derek is a medical graduate of NUI Galway, and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, having originally specialised in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. His specialist spinal surgery training has taken him to world renowned centres abroad including Institute de la Colonne Vertebrale, Bordeaux and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London, UK.

Derek previously completed Masters Degrees in Medical Sciences and later, in Surgery. As a result of his extensive experience in musculoskeletal trauma, he is the editor and creator of the popular patient website http://www.myorthoclinic.com. Derek directs the spinal studies module on the UCD Masters Degree in Physiotherapy.

Derek has chaired the PatientLine working group with Eurospine, the European Spine Society and remains an active contributor for the Patient Line (link: https://www.eurospinepatientline.org) resource for spine patients. He also leads a task force on environmental sustainability within Eurospine. He has published widely in international surgical journals, see below.

Derek is a board member with the Road Safety Authority and Irish Doctors for the Environment. He acts as a clinical advisor for Zoan Biomed (hyperlink: https://zoanbiomed.com/) and as a healthcare sustainability contributor for a number of healthcare leaders including Johnston & Johnston.

Derek is also currently working on pre-clinical projects concerning the future development of augmented reality software applications in the operating room with mixed reality technology for surgery.
